12. I am getting a .PRJ error when I am exporting to a Shapefile from GPS Pathfinder Office.

Your exported data is missing a projection file. ESRI uses .PRJ files to project data into a specific user defined coordinate system and datum so your data accurately lines up with any imagery that has been geo-referenced. If you have ArcGIS installed on the same computer as pathfinder office, you can use the ESRI .prj files during the Export option in Pathfinder*. Assigning a .prj to your Trimble export will allow other programs like ArcGIS and AutoDesk Map3D/Civil3D to read this .prj and already know what projection (coordinate system and datum) your data is in. To attach a .prj file to your Shapefile, click on Utilities>Export in Pathfinder Office. Select an export setup (You will want Sample ESRI Shapefile Setup or a template that you have created), then click on properties…

FAQ_SUREVY_MAPPING_GNSSFAQ_SURVEY_MAPPING_EXPORT

Under Projection File, browse to the ESRI folder named “Coordinate Systems”

It lives here on a 64 BIT computer:

C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\Coordinate Systems

or here on a 32 bit computer:

C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\Coordinate Systems”

Attach the .prj that matches your export Coordinate System and then click on OK.

*ESRI has changed the installation package in recent versions (10.1 and 10.2) to not include a Coordinate Systems folder. According to them, the .prj files required a significant portion of the time taken up by the software installation process in previous versions. They are trying to improve the installation experience and simplify localization support, so the files are no longer included in the installation package. Instead, a virtual directory structure is built directly from the coordinate system data. Commonly used coordinate systems can be exported to a Favorites folder. The physical location of this folder is the C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\ESRI\Desktop10.2\ArcMap\Coordinate Systems folder.
